Assignment 1 - Me, Myself and I

  Qualitatively about me:
- love cats
- camera/photos
- painting nails
- earrings
- milo
- balloon sculpturing
- rainbow
- cartoon (Totoro)
- children

My Name:
JAEL

Initial drafts:
I love cats and enjoy watching them too, never get tired of them and i think i see my inner self thru them. I always feel fascinated whenever i see them stretch and yawn thus i incorporated the letters of my name into the stretching cat particularly expressing it with its fur.

I love to paint my nails too, but seldom paint them because my mum thinks i look too vain with different colors on each nails. i always felt that through the different nail colors/polish painted one part or one personality of me could be expressed. for example, pastel blue(sky blue) can be used to express calm yet light and happy. with that the concept of forming letters with fingers and finger nails colored came to my mind.

If u can see, this is supposed to be a polariod camera, or to be more accurate an fujifilm Instax! i dont own one, but i felt that with a polariod camera i can express my love/interest in taking photos. another thing i like about polariod is how a photograph and appear just by pressing the shutter button, though i know the scientific theory behind it, but i'm amazed by that every time when i see it happening!

this is the 4th drawing i have, it has rainbow, cat, totoro, a cup of milo and a balloon sword. these are the things i like/love and keeps me motivated, happy and alive in everyday's life. In this drawing, i tried to personalize each of the 4 objects/animals by making them sit on a rainbow together and enjoying the moment. through such a scene, i wanted to express my fantasy desire to sit on a rainbow and smile my way through too. however, in this drawing/ this way of designing my name, i face a challenge of a lack of connection between the 4 characters on the rainbow, and with regards to this, im still working on it =P

Coloured draft:
set 1- on the rainbow

set 2 - the lonely cat

obviously the colour is quite wrong and makes the cat not appealing, but i guess i used those colours because there is a cat in real life that looks ugly but it was really adorable and it taught me lessons in life!
this is the ugly cat: :D

to bring out the letters i decided to make it a white cat with orange fur

a big white fat cat stretching on an empty street
time: 620pm, evening

Class Exercise B

Constructive Criticism Model

In today's class exercise, we were asked to do a short report based on the constructive criticism model for the picture below:
Honestly when i first saw this picture, i didn't find it too appealing =P

Anyway after a brief discussion with Sherryn, we decided on the few points below,
Generally the picture is the character found in the movie, Avatar and what caught our attention subsequently  was the McDonald logo at the upper right hand corner. we agreed that this picture was a picture that McDonald used in the promotion of the movie perhaps because they were giving out the Avatar toys.

However we felt that the McDonald logo was too small if this picture is really used for the promotion of Avatar McDonald toys. Because given the comparison between the sizes between the logo and the character's face and the "avatar' wordings, it becomes part of the background and the emphasis may be inaccurate in this case.

In addition, the colors of the background and the character are too close and similar such that at one glance it wasn't that eye-catching. also, the expression of the character shows neither excitement nor happiness which one would possibly relate with toys, hence it further more add on to the unclear intention of the picture.

Despite the unclarity, the big space that the character occupied in the picture points all the attention to him and thus the movie, which from another perspective does help to draw attention from consumers to the movie, Avatar.

Class Exercise A

Task:  Sketch a machine/device that enhances your creativity 100 times.

Solution:

Name of device(non creative) : Thinking Cap

FRONT VIEW
When Jing first presented the task, the first thing that came to my mind was brainwaves. Maybe it was due to my science background, i remember reading somewhere about the left brain being the one that contributes to creativity in humans. Hence building on the fact that the brain is responsible for creativity, brainwaves might be suitable!
At the same time i brought in the concept that i thought was amazing, having a personal TV screen by just wearing a pair of glasses. Almost at that instant (looks like my brain is working fast =P), i feel that music does a play a big role in stimulating the brain so i decided to include a pair of earphones in my device.

Adding up the 3 concepts, what i could visualize then was what u saw above, somewhat like a earphone and yet like a net-like cap covering the user's skull.

The earphone aspect i would say is an inspiration/ similar concept from SONY's Walkman W series, W250.

=D That's so much for Excercise A!
Luckily it need not to be realistic because i suppose there might be some protest about sending brainwaves to induce some changes in the brain (a little creepy tho).
